In Japan, it is believed that the Cloud Dragon is one of the protectors of Buddhist law and doctrine. This mythical deity of heaven is believed to have the ability of shape-shifting. The image of the Cloud Dragon can be seen in Buddhist temples, especially those of the school of Zen Buddhism e.g. Rinzai).

In Buddhism, dragons are revered as protectors of the Buddha's teachings, or the Dharma. Dragons are described as marvelous beings with the power to move between the human realm and spiritual perfection. Buddhists use the image of the dragon to express their wish for the Dharma to be protected from human selfishness. The Cloud Dragon represents the Yang, or the male principle, associated with the element Wood, and represents the ruler of the East and the spring season.
