Early 20th Century Japanese Hanging Scroll Kannon Bosatsu | Boddhisattva
Kannon-sama or Kannon bosatsu is a female bodhisattva, an enlightened being that renounces nirvana in order to stay on Earth and help all sentient beings. Kannon bosatsu is worshipped in Japan as a goddess of mercy, and protector of pets and stands as a symbol of great compassion. This hanging scroll depicts Kannon bosatsu in the Seikannon (Shōkannon) form, dressed in an elegant royal robe holding a lotus flower. Her image brings an atmosphere of tranquillity, warmth and peace. The hanging scroll fills the space/room with lightness and fresh peachy colour.
The silk of kami ichimonji and hashira no naka mawashi have a rich floral pattern as well as the hanging futtai. The scroll is a fine example of balanced peach at the bottom and top of the scroll and kaki, purple and golden accent tones. The beauty of the image of Kannon bosatsu is in its simplicity and elegance.
